Overview of Cookies and Similar Technologies
Cookies are small text files, stored on your browser or device by websites, applications, online media, and advertisements, and which are used to remember your browser or device when you visit websites. We also use other technologies that can identify you or your devices, such as "pixel tags" (also known as beacons). "Pixel tags" are small blocks of code installed on a website, application or advertisement that can read certain information about your device and browser, e.g. device type, operating system, browser type and version, website visited, time of visit, referring website, IP address, advertising identifier, and other similar techonology, including a small text file (cookie) that uniquely identifies the device. "Pixels" are tools that allow third parties to set and read browser cookies from a domain that they do not themselves operate, and collect data about the domain's visitors, usually with the permission of the domain owner. "Local storage" generally refers to other places on a browser or device, where data can be stored by websites, advertisements or third parties (e.g. the HTML5 local storage and browser cache). "Software Development Kits" (also called SDKs) function as pixels and cookies, but in the context of mobile apps, where pixels and cookies cannot always function. The primary developer of an app may install pieces of code (the SDK) from app partners, and thereby allow the partner to collect certain data about the user's device, network and their interaction with the app.
